The Department of Earth Sciences has about 70 employees. We have Bachelor and Master’s programmes in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, ecosystem sciences, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. The research strategy for the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.
Job assignments
The Regional Climate Group (RCG) is part of the Department of Earths Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. RCG studies climate at regional-to-global scales based on instrumental data, Global and Regional Climate Modelling, and paleoclimate proxy records. RCG has a unique profile within the Swedish climate research community, and an international reputation in the fields of regional climate analysis and modeling. Recently, RCG took lead in starting a CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study project on high resolution climate modeling over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). To strengthen its capacity in regional climate modeling, RCG is seeking a researcher to join an ongoing research project supported by MERGE (a Swedish national strategic research program), the Swedish Research Council (2019-03954) and WCRP/CORDEX, carrying out research with help of convection permitting climate modeling in cold regions of high altitudes and/or high latitudes.
Specifically the successful candidate is expected to:
- enhance our understanding of physical processes behind the variability of convective precipitation and its contribution to the total precipitation over the TP, and to
- assess the ability of a regional climate model such as WRF with various combinations of model setups (e.g. different combinations of physics schemes and resolutions) in simulating convective and stratiform precipitation over the TP.
Qualifications
To be successful in this position the applicant will need:
- A Doctoral degree in Meteorology or what the employer considers as a closely related field from within the last three years.
- Some experience with statistical analysis with large amount of data from surface stations, satellite, radio sounding, and climate models.
- Documented expertise with setting up and running a regional climate model, preferably WRF in convection permitting mode.
- Documented experience with climate dynamics and regional climate processes, preferably related to the TP.
- Demonstrated skill in Unix system and scientific programming (e.g. R or Matlab) and data visualization (e.g. NCL).
- Written and oral communication skills including an ability to publish research results, write reports, and make scientific presentations.
Employment
The postdoc position is for two years full-time placed at the Department of Earth Sciences. The position will be taken up in 2020-03-01
