The Third Pole Environment international program will continue pioneering and coordinating international research effort in the study of Third Pole earth system science. According to the latest resolution reached upon during the 10th TPE workshop by leading scientists in relevant research area from over 20 countries.

Held on November 17, 2023, in Chongqing, China, the 10th TPE workshop is chaired by Prof. Tandong Yao. It kicked off with a general introduction by Prof. Shilong Piao on the program’s background and major achievements since its initiation in 2009. Several thought-provoking questions were proposed to the participants, inviting their inputs on further development of the program.
Participants discussed knowledge gaps in understanding earth system science, proposed solution-orientated study, and empahszied on the importance to conduct education to both graduates and local residents, and warned of balancing resources exploration with ecological environment protection.
They all realized the importance to timely transfer knowledge to stakeholders at different levels, warned of possible tipping points for various earth system and proposed climate adaptation strategies from different perspectives.
The workshop ended with summary given by Prof. Volker Mosbrugger, and concluding remarks made by Profs. Tandong Yao and Shilong Piao. The 10th TPE workshop was the latest of the workshop series by the TPE international program to promote academic exchanges and communications, with the first nine held in, consecutively, 2009 at Beijing/China, 2010 at Kathmandu/Nepal, 2011 at Reykjavik/Iceland, 2013 at Derhadun/India, 2014 at Berlin/Germany, 2016 at Columbus/US, 2017 at Kunming/China, 2018 at Gothenburg/Sweden, and 2019 at Frankfurt/Germany. The venue and time for the next workshop remained undecided and would be announced once confirmed.
