In August 2024, Chinese scientists went on an expedition to the Puruogangri ice cap on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the largest in mid-low latitudes to conduct reconnaissance for possible ice core retrieval effort. Field survey found the ice cap to be as thick as 400 m, championing the thickest glacier on the plateau, thus convinced them of the suitability to drill ice cores. After over 100-day efforts of deploying helicopters, ground penetrating radars, and various kinds of drills, they finally succeeded in retrieving a 324 m-long ice core from the ice cap, the longest ice core from mountain glaciers so far on earth. More sample separation and analyses are undergoing, with results expected to shed light on long-term climate change history on the Plateau.
