Ice cores are important earth climate archives. To retrieve ice cores to bedrock on the Tibetan Plateau and understand climate history of the Plateau, TPE scientists embarked on a harsh and treaturous journey to the Puruogangri Ice Field, the third largest ice field on earth, to retrieve ice cores.
After hard work for over 20 days on elevetions beyond 6000 m, the ice core drilling group succeeded in acquiring several deep ices cores totaling over 1200 meters in length. Among them, two were over 300 m in length. Those ice core samples retrieved from different depths and regions are believed to shed light on the climate scenarios over and beyond the Tibetan Plateau.
The expedition was harsh, but the crew were never deterred. More information of the expedition can be found at ifeng.
