TPE held a side event for the Celebration of 1st World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day 2025 on the afternoon of 21 March, 2025 at the UNESCO HQ in Paris, France. The side event witnessed an opening remarks by Prof. Tandong Yao, introducing existing efforts in safeguarding glaciers on the Third Pole, a region accommodating a glacial coverage of~100,000 km2 and ice volume of ~8,000 Gt, hence widely acknowledged as the Asian water tower. It also invited lectures from international esteemed earth scientists Profs. Lonnie G. Thompson, Walter Immerzeel, and Deliang Chen to share their latest understanding of glacial status in the region and their thoughts on how to better save the retreating glaciers in the region. The ensuing round-table discussions revolved around measures to protect and preserve trans-Himalayas glacial resources for social wellbeing.

Given the extensive disequilibrium featuring accelerated increase (loss) in liquid (solid) water in glacier status in the trans-Himalayas, it becomes an emerging issue to more efficiently confront climate changes, conduct academic exchanges and communications, encourage innovation and apply cutting-edge technology to the effort. This event helped raise awareness of the importance of the cryosphere in the region, and achieved a broad knowledge spectrum that will be conducive to promoting international cooperation for glaciologibal study.
